MOBILE & AERIAL LiDAR SCANNING

Mobile and Aerial LiDAR Scanning

SJB Group uses a combination of LiDAR scanners, high-definition cameras, and GPS technology on a mobile platform such as a car, drone, or helicopter to collect survey data at a much faster speed and in a much safer manner than traditional surveying methods.

The laser scanner collects 3D observations while cameras collect high-resolution digital images. Redundant GPS antennas are used for accuracy of location. This data is combined to create a colorized point cloud with X, Y, and Z coordinates for each point with an accuracy of approximately 2 to 4 centimeters. Use of GPS with ground control can bring the accuracy to under 2 centimeters if desired.

How does LiDAR work?

LiDAR, or light detection and ranging, scanners use lasers to measure the distance of objects from the scanner based on the amount of time it takes for the laser light to reflect back to the scanner. This happens at light speed and is able to be collected as the scanner is in motion.

Applications

  • Topographic mapping
  • Coastline mapping
  • Surveying & engineering
  • Site feasibility studies
  • GIS applications
  • Natural gas & product pipelines
  • Refineries, petrochemical & manufacturing plants
  • Transportation projects
  • Construction monitoring
  • Building renovations and additions

Benefits

  • Crews avoid extended exposure to potentially dangerous circumstances (examples: busy highways or intersections, inside plant facilities)
  • Lessens the disruption to operations and/or the general public
  • Increased accessibility to remote or hazardous environments
  • Incorporates GPS and survey controls for accuracy
  • Cost effective in terms of time and money
  • Rapid response and data collection
  • Comprehensive data collection (no need for costly return trips)

Mobile LiDAR Scanning

LiDAR scanning on the ground requires the use of a truck or ATV. Our LiDAR scanner is mounted to the vehicle, and it can drive the determined area to collect data points. The vehicle can travel in normal traffic, making it ideal for scanning of roadways and urbanized areas. Alternative vehicles may include boats or marine craft.

Aerial LiDAR Scanning

SJB Group has aerial LiDAR scanning capabilities as well via drone or helicopter. The firm employs licensed drone pilots who both have received safety certifications for the Unmanned Safety Institute and participated in the Federal Aviation Administration's WINGS Pilot Proficiency Program. Aerial LiDAR scanning is an ideal solution for large projects such as pipelines or large tracts of land.
